Wind Farm
Wind turbines: Yes or No?
This topic is polarizing. Some people see wind turbines as useful and aesthetically pleasing, while others feel they mar the landscape and are unnecessary.
We were tasked with producing a film about the construction of a wind farm using a drone – a challenging task, especially considering that the drone needs to fly at a height of three hundred meters. Was there a possibility to accomplish this successfully, and would the battery provide sufficient energy for landing from this considerable height? After intensive discussions, the drone pilot and the cameraman met at the control tower of an airfield to discuss the planned test flight. Here, we obtained permission for the flight at this altitude. That was fantastic – everything was perfect, and it conveyed a completely new feeling.
After obtaining the special permit, we commenced our filming in Mohlis near Schmölln/Thuringia. We were active at the filming location for several days. A particular highlight was the assembly of the nacelle. This step is metaphorically referred to as the "wedding" because it involves connecting the actual drive unit, which controls the rotation of the rotor blades and converts the generated force (torque) into electrical energy, to the tower of the wind turbine. The attachment of the propellers was depicted at eight times the speed. To avoid vibrations, the component had to be lifted very slowly.
At the end of the day, we enjoyed our evening snack amidst a splendid sunset.
The filming took place in July/August 2019.
